Reflection on lesson

This screen shot shows I have exported my trailer and put it on youtube. This allows me to embed in on my blog and gain feedback for improvements.

I have published my trailer on my website. Although I have not taken photographs for my website yet I have placed an exsisting one in the correct place in order to get a layout I am ultimately happy with.

Trailer first draft

This is the first draft of my horror movie trailer. I will collect feedback and improve accordingly to allow for a better quality trailer.

Feedback from lecturer
I was told to improve by possibly adding in sound effects which match the action of my clip and relate to the horror genre. On the scene of the young girl being snatched, I was advised to try a scream sound effect in order to add to the thrilling action. This feedback has influenced by creative process and allowed me to improve.

To do list for today

Complete my homepage for my website task to allow me to move onto other sections which will give me enough time to reach my deadlines. On my about page I need to complete my plot and design of the page.

Billing Block planning

Due to my lack of pre-existing knowledge of film poster conventions, I decided to look at existing horror movie posters in order to get an idea when creating my own product. One feature in particular is the billing blocks therefore I have looked at some in order to get an idea what they should look like and what should be written in one.

Billing blocks feature at the bottom of all film posters, it is here the directors, producers and writers are credited. These blocks are featured in small print in the bottom third, this allows credit to be given without attention taken away from the main image (which is usually the main selling point). I have researched into fonts also and the font steeltongs is used predominantly to give this stacked effect.

Progression Aims

By the end of this lesson I intend to start my website on Wix.com this will allow pre-set layouts but also allows me to cutomize to the conventional horror film website.

Today I have made progress in beginning my website task. This will be the homepage in which I have tested my main image and added my logo, film title and film slogan. There is still progress to be made as I need to complete the other pages and add my overall film trailer to make it conventional and professional. I am happy with the color scheme but improvements will be made. Overall i have met my aims for today.

Sound for my product final choices

This Prezi shows my final choices of sound for my film trailer before improvements. I am quite happy with my sound editing as it creates tension fitting with the traditional horror trailer.

sound update

I have added a scream sound effect on the part where the girl is captured this creates a sound wall and is conventional to most trailer. This was the main criticism i recieved therefore by adding this I have improved my trailer for my target audience.

Trailer update: sound and transitions

This is a further screen shot of my progress on my trailer. When watching it back I realized with feedback that it needed more text in order for the story to flow better therefore I added more text slides which I think has improved it a lot.

Furthermore on certain slides I added more sound effects called 'the Boom' this is conventional to many horror film trailers as it can have a terrifying effect on the audience and allow the trailer to have more impact. Additionally

Lastly I have finished adding video transitions to my new added slides this allows the trailer to flow easier making it more appealing to the audience. The transition I added above was Film dissolve this creates a slight overlap of the two slides in conjunction to each other.

trailer update

I have now added all cinematic effects including music, sound effects, video effects, audio transitions and video transitions. This means my first draft of my trailer is complete.

Trailer Progress

From this screenshot of my progress on premiere pro it is evident that i have added sound and transitions to my trailer. However I still need to add sound effects on different sections to fit to the conventions of a typical horror trailer. I am happy with my footage but I am going to try out different effects to see if i can improve further.

Time management: Trailer progress

This screenshot shows my progress of putting together my movie trailer for my main task. So far I have completed putting my footage in order and placing my film logo before. Still to do I have to replace the audio with my chosen soundtrack and add in the text elements. I think I am on track to finish this trailer and edit the transitions.

Choosing my cast

protagonist

Name: Chloe Hemmings
Age: 14

I chose Chloe because she was at the right age for what I wanted my main character to be. This way she comes across as innocent and vunerable making for a scary horror. Furthermore I needed to know this person well enough to work with comfortably and to be able to oraganise flexiable time scales. Notwithstanding Chloe has the right look as blonde hair has connatations of damsel in distress and purity which is exactly what I want to capture in my trailer. She has a background in drama and dance therefore I knew she would treat this professionally and have the skills needed for the performance.

Antagonist

Name: Hannah Carling
Age: 17

I chose Hannah as she was a little older therefore will come across as more intimidating to my younger main character. I see Hannah on a regular basis as we live near each other this way I could easily do costume and makeup trials to see which one fits the look. Additionally Hannah is very passionate and I feel a great asset to my cast. She has a interest in horror movies and tv shows such as 'American Horror story' which allow her to get into character easily. Above are two images one of her before the makeup and mask trial and one after.

Self assessment of blog so for

By looking at my blog and the progress I have made, I would give my blog roughly Level 2 10 marks this is because my time management is weak and my blog may be considered very text heavy. To improve this lack of media, i will ensure to do video feedback, online polls and make it more media rich. This will allow me to reach the next level and improve further. I have a basic understanding and some areas are stronger than others such as my shortlists, layouts and storyboarding may be considered my strength whereas my target audience research may be my weak point. This post is a way of highlighting my drawbacks so i can improve them to reach a higher level.

improvement to do list
- video feedback for target audience research
- reader profiles
- possibly a focus group video
- more media rich content
- add time management evidence

successes
- completed the check list
- proficient communication skills
- good level of care in presentation of research and planning

Film schedule for half term

This is my film time schedule for october half term. By having a rough outline of what must complete in a certain period of time it will allow me to be organised and have the work completed. This gives me enough time to get everything completed below I will set a time scale for how long each task will take.

This breaks down what i need to complete each day and gives me enough time to improve where needed.

weather forecast

I had planned to do most of my filming on the monday and improve accordingly, however since it will rain I will most likely change the date to the sunday and check with my cast if this new change is fine with them. Although this may be problematic I can easily organize to film the indoor parts first.

List of Resources

- access to caterpillar woods and permission to use the land
Not private therefore should be easily accessible no booking neccessary.

- access to adobe Photoshop to edit my final product
-access to after effects
-access to premiere pro for editing my final footage and creating the trailer

these are available at college therefore I should have easy access without issues.

Shot list

These shots will help me when creating my trailer. However these may change if the footage doesn't appeal to me or look good on screen. This is a basic plan and will be my step by step guide  for when creating my trailer. I feel this is a variety of shot types and camera movement therefore won't be boring or dull on screen.

Trailer storyboard

This is my initial movie trailer storyboard which includes the shot types and camera movements i will use when filming. However if these ideas do not look good when filming I may alter them which is why I created them online so I can alter them at any time. I think this footage will fit in with the conventional horror trailer.

target audience research video

Results: From my target audience research I gained knowledge that the horror genre is most popular. I discovered this by sampling two people from different age groups (17 and 14) which allowed me to see that horror fits a wide audience.

Time managment

Preliminary Task: reconstruction

Media Preliminary Task - Reconstruction

This is a link to my reconstruction for the twlight Trailer. We had a few issues with it with losing our original footage therefore we had only a short amount of time to shoot and edit. We used our storyboards and followed the shots accordinally this was a good practice for when I create my real film trailer. We have learned from our mistakes and will improve on this.

We only reconstructed the 1st 30 seconds of the trailer because we got the idea for the shots and understood the process by this point. Although our reconstruction wasn't exact we have learned how to edit and how to use the camera.

To edit we used premiere pro

This program allowed me to upload the footage immediately. I will use this when creating my final product. I learnt some valuable skills like how to speed up time, how to slow it down, how to crop and how to add text. These are all transferable skills which I will eventually need. We also uploaded this video to youtube so this way it won't be lost, furthermore this is another skill we will have to do when creating our own final product. I am hoping due to these skills I will find it easier to create my trailer and the outcome will be much more professional due to the time I will plan for it.

Ancillary task reconstruction: film poster

I have had a go at recreating a film poster for my ancillary task. I decided to go with the iconic scream film poster. This looked quite simple for my first go at recreating and I think it has been successful. I have went of dafont.com which has allowed me to get similar fonts to the original movie. To recreate this film poster I planned a photo-shoot with my friend Hannah and took various shots until I found one which I could recreate into a film poster. we had to refer back to the image to ensure the pose was correct. Furthermore in preparation she made sure she was wearing a lipstick just like the woman on the photograph this again makes it more similar. Overall I am happy with the finish although I may have added in darker shadows around the nose and eyes to make more of a likeness.

My original shot was This:

I have used photoshop in order to crop and use effects on this to make it more like the original 1996 film poster.

Previous to this I had sent my model Hannah a photograph of the film poster over the social network 'instagram' this meant she had previous knowledge and could plan in advance.

Institution Logo Ideas

Another attempt
This was one of my logo designs however I felt the one below was more simplistic and overall more professional looking. By process of elimination I have decided against this Logo.

I have created this Logo on photoshop which I think goes well with my chosen genre of horror. I will further develop this logo on After effects which will make my logo a moving image. I downloaded fonts such as Frankenstein and ghost rider from Dafont.com which i downloaded and used on photoshop. This allowed me to go past the generic fonts already given on photoshop and use my own to match it more to my genre and ideas. I added images to add to the horror genre.

Background:

I have edited my logo on after effects to make it a moving image along with my trailer. i decided to make it look like glass shattered I did this by using the shatter effect and changing the shape to glass this makes it look like the image is shattering leaving behind my film institution logo. This will create an impact on my target audience and also a wide awareness.

Background information about my company

Name: Trepidation Productions. I decided on this name because I wanted to link my company in with the genre of film I am creating. This concept is very important, the name means fear which compares well with my film.

Logo: For my logo I have created a trademark, this will be the wolf and the moon this will be my USP and will become instantly recognisable. I chose to create these images because I thought again they link with my genre but also because my target audience will become aware of it. The colours of black and white ensure that it fits in with the darkness element. I have made my logo glow using after effects this helps my moving picture creation and is conventional to a lot of film logos.

Background: It will be based in The UK this is because smaller british independent film companies will be more realistic for my product due to factors such as budget and lack of CGI and special effects.

Crew: I was thinking of having a small crew on this movie as typically the blockbusters have hundreds of people working on set. I was thinking around 30 people including director, cameramen/women, cast, producers, editors etc.

year: It will be established in 2013-14 this will make it fairly new therefore there can be no preconceived opinions made of the company, but it is still known to the public and has had time to establish itself

Sub genres

Action Horror

Action horror is a sub-genre that combines the intrusion of evil, an event or the supernatural in horror films with the gun fights and frantic chases that are performed in ACTION-GENRE..

Themes and elements that are often prevalent in action-horror include most commonly zombies, along with demons, gore, vicious animals and vampires.

Examples include, dawn of the dead, from dusk till dawn and blade this category also fuses the fantasy horror genre, for example resident evil,. Ghost rider and planet terror

Comedy Horror

Combines elements of comedy and horror fiction. The horror genre almost always inevitably crosses over with black comedy.
The film “The legend of the sleepy hollow” is cited to be the first and greatest comedy-horror genre..• Examples include. Scary movie , slither ,Shaun of the Dead and gremlins.

Gothic horror

Gothic horror contains bot elements of gothic and horror. Some of the earliest horror movies were of this genre..
Gothic horror films normally includes features such as castles, dungeons ruined landscapes, extreme landscapes and magic/the supernatural.
Examples include Dracula, Frankenstein and the mummy

Psychological horror

Relies on a characters fears, guilt and belief , emotional instability and at times the supernatural to build the tension and further the plot. The horror comes from the reality of this particular sub genre.

Examples include, the shining, the ring and the exorcist

Science Fiction Horror

Often deals with the paranormal but is not limited to mad scientists and /or experiments going wrong.
This genre can also deal with the fear of technology

Examples include Alien and the mist

From my previous research and planning I have decided to pick action horror as my sub-genre, this combines my two top genres from my survey therefore will attract both horror and action watchers to the cinema. My audience seems interested in the action genre so by incorporating this with my horror it will attract a wider audience but also I will enjoy making it.
